Plant-Based Omega-3: What ALA Does—and Why It Isn’t the Same as EPA or DHA

“Omega-3” sounds like a single nutrient, but it actually describes a family of fatty acids. That distinction becomes especially important when comparing fish oil with plant-based omega products.

ALA is a real omega-3

Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, is an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Our bodies cannot make it, so it has to come from food. Plant sources include flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts and certain vegetable oils.

For adults, the established adequate intake for ALA is 1.6 g/day for men and 1.1 g/day for women.

ALA, EPA and DHA are not interchangeable

EPA and DHA are the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids commonly associated with oily fish and algae. The human body can convert some ALA into EPA and then DHA, but NIH notes that this conversion is very limited. Getting EPA and DHA directly from foods or supplements is therefore the practical way to raise their levels in the body.

This is why a plant-derived omega supplement should not simply be described as a vegan equivalent of fish oil unless it actually contains EPA or DHA—for example, from algae.

Then why take plant omega oils?

Because ALA remains an essential nutrient in its own right. Different plant oils naturally provide different fatty acids. Daraj Wellness Vegan Omega 3-6-9 combines sources including flaxseed, olive, borage, pomegranate and sacha inchi oils.

Rather than treating the numbers 3, 6 and 9 as a marketing score, it is more useful to understand what those oils actually contribute. A sensible supplement should complement the diet—not create the impression that every omega fatty acid does the same job.

The better question is not “Does it contain omega-3?” It is: Which omega-3 does it contain?
